Hi, I have a Three USB modem in the UK (mobile broadband zte mf112) which gives a good internet connection to my MacBook Air when I'm out and about. I thought it would be a simple matter to share this from my MBA to my Ipad (using internet sharing), but I just cannot make it work. I can get the Ipad to connect to a wireless network set up by the MBA, but it doesn't connect to the internet saying the server isn't responding, or the Ipad isn't connected to the internet.
If anyone has got this to work, i'd be grateful for some help. I'm not sure how much help I can be because mine popped right in with no difficulties at all. For unrelated reasons, I'm not using it now. The indication that you're getting is misleading. It's telling you that there is a signal and that the signal strength is satisfactory.
It's saying nothing about the usability of that signal. First and foremost, the Mac connection to the modem MUST be Ethernet cable because AirPort uses only one channel. In System Prefs Sharing pane, you want to configure to 'Share the connection from Ethernet to computers using AirPort.' Thanks again both.
Jan 23, 2013 - Now to start the network, check the 'Internet Sharing' box. A new menu will popup asking you if you are sure you want to start it. You may get a.
I think I have done exactly as you suggest. The USB modem is in the MBA USB port and connects to the mobile signal giving a good, fast connection - allowing my MBA to use safari and mail very well and with good download speeds. I go in to system preferences, internet and network, sharing and internet sharing in the 'share connection from' I choose ZTEUSBModem. In the 'to computers using' I tick Airport. In airport options I've tried 40 and 128 bit WEP. The ipad sees a wireless network and connects using the password I set in the internet sharing, airport options section.
However, if you try to look at a web page, it just sits there for a bit but doesn't work. I tried my Iphone 4 last night and got the same result. Both work fine with my usual home wifi network, just can't get them to play nice with this USB mobile broadband modem. Thanks again for trying to help.
So for completeness - and thanks for all your help. Set up the USB modem on the macbook Air using the installation software that was built into the USB device Then i needed to add an airport service to the location it set up (as it didn't have one by default) - I did this in the Network pane of System preferences Then I enabled internet sharing in the sharing pane, sharing the ZTEUSBModem to airport (and I used a 40bit encryption) But it didn't work until I set the macbook Air's firewall to 'accept all incoming connections'.
